This past Sunday marked an important milestone for the Maccabi Wild Bees, an inspiring team of women aged 30 and over, as they represented Israel in the Carnival of Nations Women’s Soccer Championship. Held at the legendary home grounds of the Matildas in Bundoora, this tournament is a celebration of diversity and unity through sport.
The journey wasn’t without its initial hurdles. Originally, the team faced a challenge when they were informed that they wouldn’t be able to compete under the name “Israel” due to sensitivities. After some respectful and heartfelt dialogue and internal discussion, the team was given the green light, albeit at the last minute, to proudly represent Israel on the field.
Despite the initial uncertainty, the Wild Bees stepped into round one with a wave of camaraderie and positivity. They tied 0-0 with both Denmark and New Zealand in the opening matches, receiving a warm welcome and support from fellow teams. This past weekend, in round two, they played against Scotland resulting in a 9-0 goal scoring extravaganza. A scheduled match against Ethiopia had to be postponed due to weather warnings. Team Israel has a guaranteed spot in the finals as we are second placed in our pool, which will be held next week.
Team manager Talya Bassin shared, “I am relieved that we could proudly represent Israel. It is a small but powerful reminder that respectful dialogue can make a difference and that there can be fairness and inclusion in sport, something that is lacking in the world’s sporting arena at the moment."
Now heading into a busy and exciting final round SUN 2nd Nov at 11:40, the Maccabi Wild Bees / Team Israel are proud to represent and showcase the power of community and sport. The team is ready to continue their journey on the epic fields of Bundoora with pride and excitement.
