The Socceroos kicked off their 2026 World Cup campaign on Sunday afternoon, and while the action was unfolding in Vancouver, the heart of the celebration was right here in Melbourne. Maccabi FC Caulfield took over the Classic Cinema for a blockbuster watch party that proved to be as clinical and thrilling as the match itself.

From 1:00 PM, the foyer was a sea of green and gold as players, families, and supporters arrived in full force. The MFCC events committee—Jenna, Tali, and Ari—were on hand to welcome the community with gifts and prizes from our generous sponsors, setting the stage for an unforgettable afternoon of camaraderie.

Adding to the festive community spirit, our friends at Mama Falafel got in on the celebrations, offering all club members delicious specials to ensure everyone had the perfect pre- and post-game fuel.

A David vs. Goliath Victory

On paper, the task seemed insurmountable. As SBS commentators noted, the Turkish squad’s €600 million valuation dwarfed Australia’s €70 million. Yet, inside the cinema, the atmosphere was thick with belief. As the crowd settled in with snacks and competition forms, the tension was palpable—but so was the hope.

The young Socceroos side delivered a performance for the ages. Nestory Irankunda ignited the room with a brilliant solo strike to make it 1-0, sending the audience into a frenzy. Despite Turkey dominating 72% of the possession and peppering the goal with 30 shots, the Australian defence held firm. Debutant keeper Patrick Beach was the hero of the hour, racking up eight crucial saves to keep the dream alive.

A Win for the Community

When Connor Metcalfe slotted home the second goal late in the game, the Classic Cinema erupted. The victory was sealed, and the historic three points were ours.

The afternoon concluded with smiles, cheers, and the final distribution of event prizes. It was more than just a football match; it was a testament to the spirit of our club and the joy of coming together.

A massive thank you goes out to our organizing committee and the tireless volunteers who made this event possible. We also extend our deepest gratitude to the team at the Classic Cinema for being such incredible hosts and providing the perfect backdrop for this historic afternoon. If you loved the venue as much as we did, we highly encourage you to support them by signing up for their Movie Club, or even considering the Classic as the destination for your next family simcha!

Whether on the pitch in Vancouver or in the seats at the Classic, everyone was a winner on the day.
